Why is sustainability a core part of our brand?
heroyne stands for the idea that choosing sustainability does not have to be a compromise. We know that a modern design, high-end quality, and sustainable and ethical manufacturing decisions can go hand in hand.
Our goal is to combine these elements to create the everyday luxury.
It was very clear, from the beginning, that transparency is key to us and, therefore, a core element of heroyne.
Since there is no clear and defined formula, as to what exactly is sustainable, we would like to give you an idea, what areas of a production process are affected, regardless of whether it is the fashion or, more precisely, the jewelry industry. Below, we are pointing out why being ethical and sustainable is essential, its implications, and what we do in that realm.
Our vision is to create an honest, transparent, ethical, high quality, locally produced jewelry brand that looks and feels amazing.
We are not 100% perfect. Our goal is to continuously improve and try to make the world a place where we are proud to be a part of.
OUR PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY
We decided to produce locally in Germany for several reasons.
First and foremost, we want to guarantee you an amazing quality. Made in Germany is a commitment that we follow. Although the ‘made in’ tags are often prone to greenwashing, we not only assemble as the last manufacturing step in Germany, we produce 100% of our pieces locally.
We understand that building a brand is intimately connected to the place and people behind it. Our purpose is to create and offer you the best product and to make an investment ourselves. We are proud that we can support our local economy and help creating jobs and job security as our partners are traditional, mostly family-owned, and certified goldsmiths.
Producing locally also helps us to stay environmentally friendly by reducing emissions due to long transportation routes and thus reducing our carbon footprint.
The challenge of a sustainable and ethical responsible value chain begins with the procurement of raw materials.
The usual process of gold mining is closely related to inhumane working conditions, prostitution or child labor and environmental damage due to the use of cyanide, which is highly toxic. Cyanide spilled into groundwater can persist for long periods of time and contaminate drinking water aquifers, resulting in environmental damage and public health risks. Fair alternatives include the use of certified, fairly mined precious metals or the use of certified recycled raw materials.
It is key for us to control our value chain and make it transparent to you. We have decided to source our materials ethically and conflict-free from certified German precious metal refineries, who test, melt down, and clear the materials in regulated technical processes into fine gold and silver. We are proud to offer you jewelry from certified recycled gold and silver.
Making sustainable choices is also about how long you can love and enjoy your favorite pieces.
The fading of gold, turning green or silver over time, is a sign of poor quality. Besides the use of real gold, the thickness of the gold layer is ultimately decisive for the quality and durability of gold-plated jewelry.
Therefore, we decided to use an e exceptionally thick layer of 18 karat gold on all of our pieces, to ensure that you can wear your favorite pieces every day and for years to come. If you prefer silver jewelry, make sure your pieces are made from solid 925 sterling silver.
Ethical working conditions
It is crucial to us to uphold all relevant ethical, human rights, social and environmental topics, and to guarantee a responsible acting supply chain.
We are extremely careful when choosing our partners. Before accepting any collaboration, we talk profoundly about the procurement, working conditions, and undertake profound diligence.
Our partnerships are hand-selected. We work with traditional, mostly family-owned, and certified goldsmith manufacturers. For more detail about the certification, please refer to www.responsiblejewellery.com (RJC certification). We have also decided to manufacture exclusively in Germany.
Our shipping packaging is made from at least 90% recycled material and is fully recycable and compostable.
For our other papers and wrapping, we use almost always FSC certified paper.
FSC is an international certificate for sustainable forestry. It ensures the use of forests in accordance with the social, economic and ecological needs of current and future generations.
Support of traditional craftsmanship
In order to meet our high quality standards, we have decided to work with small, hand-selected, traditional goldsmiths in Germany.
All of our pieces are individually handcrafted, and each single manufacturing step is carried out by an experienced craftsman.
We are properly casting our pieces, which makes them more robust and gives them an overall higher quality than punching out shapes from metal plates and bend it to form.
The further away a supplier is, the less control you have. Face-to-face communication and regular visits, however, allow us to address any concerns and ensure that all products meet our standards.
Environmentally friendly manufacturing processes
We manufacture locally and produce in small batches to avoid over-production.
Small-scale local production helps to avoid the waste of unneeded products, reduce emissions and energy usage. Since most of our manufacturers are certified or are currently in the process of certification, they are already focusing on processes that produce less waste, if it’s a water recycling plant, the technical reduction of pollution levels, or the general obligations when holding the RJC certificate which includes specific environmental constraints.
Also, all left over metals are re-used and recycled to go back into the manufacturing cycle.
